A New York Gothic

The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine sits at the end of our street, is visible from our window, and also happens to be the largest cathedral in the world. Its construction began in 1892, and it remains partially unfinished. Since the cathedral is in the Gothic Revival style, I decided to wear my most medieval garb…which basically boils down to a long dress, a chunk of amethyst, and Lord of the Rings-esque hair. I enjoy gothic architecture because it’s overwhelming and disturbing, but also grotesquely beautiful. The interior and grounds of St. John’s cast an aura of simultaneous calm and creepiness.

Blank sky, plucked peacocks, heavy molded iron, stone effigies, ceilings of impossible height filled with shadows and dark arches, echoing evensong, glass stained to mimic gems, decadence, decay. Quieting and disquieting.

  1. A peacock running wild on the streets of New York? That dead bird is glorious. And you are wicked awesome for playing dress-up. When I come visit let's dress like 1920s men and hang around Greenwich Village or something.

  2. Peacocks live on St. John's grounds! I think they try their very best to stay away from the street. And flapper drag in Greenwich Village sounds amazing, you have to come visit ASAP!
